A good performer can bring an audience on a journey through powerful emotions. One minute they can make the heart soar the next make it break. That is the gift of a good performer, and strangely it is not always the best singers who can do that. The secret is how they interpret a song.

The following list contains some of Yellow Magpie’s favourite female singers:

Let’s start with that great black singer Ella Fitzgerald. Not only did Ella have a wonderful voice but she used it like a finely tuned instrument that was there to do her bidding. She was a master at interpreting a song. Here she sings the old favourite ‘Georgia On My Mind’.

Aretha Franklin

A born entertainer, Aretha Franklin is the undisputed queen of soul. This is her holding a huge crowd in the palm of her hands, which she sings ‘Respect’.

One of the worlds most renowned opera singers was Maria Callas. Known for her temperamental nature, Callas was a singer with the ability to evoke powerful emotions both in herself and in her audience. Maria Callas sung with immense passion. She died in1977 but her legacy lives on.

Listen to her as she sings ‘This is My Life’.

Sarah Brightman

Sarah Brightman has a voice that can soar to great heights. She said she always thinks of a feather when she sings and tries to emmulate that in the quality of her voice. In ‘A Question Of Honour’ she mixes operatic with contemporary, showing off her versatility.

Whitney Houston

Whitney Heuston has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently with many believing her voice is gone for good. But when she was at the top of her game, her singing was stunning. ‘I Will Always Love You’ was a huge hit for her worldwide.

Well, this list might be okay for people who sing in the shower and only shower once a week, but where is the melody and harmony? What happened to Peggy Lee? Dionne Warwick? Somebody got Whitney’s surname all wrong? Never heard of Sarah Brightman, but does she outrate J.D.L? How come that old belter Bassey got a place? Finally, what list could ignore Diana Krall yet include Cher and Byonce?

  2. Yellow Magpie says:

Thanks for your comment, Ted. Sorry you didn’t like our list – you can’t win them all!
