Okay Sex and the City 2 is not for intellectuals or for those expecting to get some kind of moral message. It is gaudy, gauche and at times ridiculous, but it is fun to watch.
Most of the women who go to the film, (men will hate it), will go for the style, they want to see the shoes, the hair, the dresses and they will certainly not be disappointed.
There have been criticisms that the film doesn’t represent the ‘hard times’ we are going through at the moment and the girls are not dressed appropriately to represent that. For goodness sake, we can see that everyday on the streets, we need a bit of escapism, something light, fluffy and colourful and this fits the bill perfectly.
‘Samantha is looking for sex, nothing new there.’
The film shows the women on an all expenses trip to Abu Dhabi thanks to Samantha. They are staying in an oppulent hotel with each woman having their own man servant. Most of the women are glad to escape their lives at home for a while, Carrie is feeling a little bored with Mr Big (Chris Noth); he wants to watch TV, she wants to party. Samantha is looking for sex, nothing new there. Charlotte is feeling the strain of motherhood, and Miranda is just happy to go along.
Carrie, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, is missing her single life and when she meets an old flame in Abu Dhabi, as you do, she flirts momentarily with disaster. Sarah Jessica Parker is quite a good actress, her character is charming, flirtatious in a non-obvious way and the character can be sympathetic. Carrie comes across as a nice person in this film.
Samantha, played by Kim Cattrall, is going through the menopause and is sex mad as usual. Her character is the least believable, lets face it there are not too many menopausal women who crave sex to the is extent she does.
However, she wants it so much she is prepared to flout Arab laws and gets herself arrested. Kim Cattrall is a good-looking woman but her portrayal of Samantha is too much, her in-your-face nymphomania is often uncomfortable and embarrassing to watch.
‘Miranda is perhaps the sanest of the four.’
Miranda is aptly portrayed by Cynthia Nixon. Miranda is perhaps the sanest of the four. She comes across as probably the smartest and most grounded. Nixon is a solid actress. She is the one who seems to hold the four together in this film and that appears to be her only role in the Sex And The City 2 but she plays it to good effect.
Kristin Davis’s Charlotte is the harrassed mother of two and is feeling the stress of it all. She is also slightly worried about her ample young nanny. Charlotte is lady-like throughout and still has a little girl charm about her. This part does not have great scope for showing her acting ability but Charlotte brings pleasure to the viewer just the same.

One of the highlights of the film is Liza Minnelli singing Beyonce’s Single Ladies, this is a hoot and highly entertaining as a more than slightly Minnelli goes through her paces.
Overall, this film is nothing more than escapism. There have been numerous voices saying the women are past it, that’s not true. It would be very interesting to see them grow old and watch their lives unfold. But the character of Samantha needs to be toned down. Maybe the producers think that is what the public expect from Samantha, but since the audiences are mostly women most would agree that even the Samantha’s of this world also want to eventually settle down.
If you have an interest in style, if you love shoes or if you want to forget your cares for two and a half hours then go along and take a trip to Abu Dhabi with the girls. Don’t take it too seriously and you will enjoy it.
