Dogs Who Continually Howl And Bark

[adsense]

They are a noise nuisance. They cause irritation and sleepless nights. They can even create rows between neighbours. Dogs that bark and howl are the ultimate source of canine discontent.
Dogs that display these behaviours are generally spoiled by their owners. They are given too much attention, too much of the wrong food and too little exercise. Often dogs that are treated in this manner can cause internal rifts in families as they are given preferential treatment over family members.

Dogs that are allowed to act in this way can scare off neighbours and relations who do not wish to be either barked at or jumped on.

The Causes Of Hyperactivity

It is important to look at the dog’s diet. Feeding them sugar and junk snacks causes hyperactivity and gives them too much energy. A proper diet is critical for reducing over-excitability and bad behaviours.

Locking dogs away in kennels for long periods also results in hyperactivity and should be avoided at all costs.

Once they are allowed out they become over-excited, as they are delighted to be free, and this causes havoc.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise

To combat bad behaviour it is important for dog owners to regularly exercise the dogs. Twice, or even thrice if the animal is particularly energetic, daily walks allow the dogs to use their excess energy and dramatically helps to curb their energy levels.

Diet And Nutrition

Dogs are omnivorous and need to be fed a balanced diet. Things like processed food, sugar and caffeine should never be given to them. Instead fresh meat and vegetables should form their diets.

Bad Behaviour

Bad behaviour should be continuously and actively discouraged. If there are places that you do not want your dog to go, you should be consistent and not allow them to go there. If the dog disobeys this, some form of punishment, perhaps putting the dog in a small room for several minutes, should be employed.

However, the only way that your dog will get the message is if you are consistent with them. If you consistently enforce your rules – the dog’s behaviour will dramatically change.

Controlling Barking

Like other behavioural problems, incessant barking can be easily controlled with the right knowledge and correct application. Quite frequently people shout at their dogs in order to get them to stop. This only encourages dogs to bark more as they believe that is their owner’s wish.

Boxer Dog

To prevent your dog from constantly barking. It is important to instil a more productive behaviour. You can do this by waiting for a pause in the dog’s barking and treating the dog with a dog snack. Every time the dog is quiet they get a treat. As you treat the dog it is important that you choose a word that they can associate for instance ‘quiet’ or ‘shush’ are ideal. It may also be prudent to link the word with a hand signal that signifies that you want the behaviour to cease.

When you have done this several times you can then start to use the hand signal and the word that you have chosen to stop the dog barking. When they have done this treat them again.

The final step in the process is to rub the dog instead of giving them dog snacks. Once again, the key to enforcing this good behaviour is consistency.
