Officials Caught Being Lazy At Anti-Lazy Conference

Chinese officials were suspended for being lazy while attending an anti-lazy training conference.

The high-level officials were participants in a conference designed to promote better work efficiency and discipline. However, they were caught reading newspapers and sleeping during the event and have now been suspended.

MSNBC reported that Chinese officials frequently have to sit through long-winded, boring meetings on dry subjects. Nonetheless, the Chinese one-party government has become highly sensitive to public opinion and stereotypes of lazy officials abound in China.

Mythbusters Cannon fodder

An experiment gone awry from the television show Mythbusters saw a cannonball accidentally damaging a house and a parked car.

Fortunately, no one was hurt during the accident when the cannonball unexpectedly bounced off a safety barrier designed to prevent it travelling outside the bounds of the test facility.

Mythbusters is the highly popular series on Discovery that finds out if certain myths are true or not. Sometimes these urban myths involve explosives.

Voyager Closes On Solar System Exit

A remarkable event in human history is on the verge of occurring as the Voyager spacecraft is about to leave the Solar System.

Voyager 1 which is 18 billion kilometres (11 billion miles) from the Sun is about to reach interstellar space where the effects of the Sun are greatly reduced and give way to the larger influence of the Milky Way’s great mass of stars.

Right now Voyager is stuck in a section of the Solar system that is quite stagnant as the solar winds are non-existent. This indicates that forces outside the Solar System are pushing inwards causing the solar winds to stop.

Voyager project scientist, Ed Stone states: ‘Voyager tells us now that we’re in a stagnation region in the outermost layer of the bubble around our solar system.’

The Rabbit That Thinks It’s A Chicken

One interesting Finnish rabbit has decided it wants to be a chicken. Otto lives with a rooster and nine hens on a farm.

Otto the rabbit prefers chicken feed to carrots, and likes to sit on the eggs.

Speaking to Reuters, the owner of Otto, Ville Kuusinen stated:

‘When I went to the hen house, I noticed he was sitting on the eggs. Later I watched through the window how he jumped on the beam, failed, tried again and with a lot of practice eventually he stayed up there.’

Although some decidedly non-chicken like traits remain. When strangers enter the chicken pen, Otto bolts for cover. It appears some things are harder to overcome.

Guitar Robber Steals From Coffin

In a bizarre crime, a man may be facing up to ten years in prison after allegedly stealing a guitar from a coffin.

Steven Conrad was accused of taking a Fender Telecaster from a grave at Allouez Cemetery, Green Bay. The guitar was buried with the late Randall Jourdan a guitar player for over four decades.

Reuters reported that the suspect allegedly told a groundskeeper ‘I have to have that guitar. It’s too expensive to be in a crypt.‘

Judge Boots Out Judgemental Facebook Juror

A member of a jury had to be dismissed by a judge after she refused to stay away from the Internet and in particular, Facebook.

The woman posted updates which stated that she wished to contact the accused after the case and also that she wanted to punch a fellow juror that irked her.

Even more bizarre was her decision to post pictures of the shoes of fellow jurors. She even commented that one person’s shoes were ‘chunky running shoes which I am pretty sure are not used for their intended purpose.‘

MSNBC reported that Judge William Froeberg dismissed her from the case stating. ‘It is unfortunate in this day and age that things are taken so lightly, such as trial when people’s lives are at stake.’

He warned the other jurors. ‘The rest of you, I don’t want to have to deal with this again. Stay off the Internet. Don’t talk about this case…And certainly don’t be Facebooking.’

The Fertile Virgin Mary

Half a million people have visited what is supposedly the belt of Mary in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ The Saviour. One day alone saw a crowd of over 82,000 people queuing to visit the relic which they believe helps women’s fertility.

The relic has been loaned from Greece. One would have to wonder though what someone noted for their supposed virginity has to do with fertility.

Stuck In A Clothes Horse

An 18-year-old student had to be rescued from an embarrassing situation. Danielle Morgan, a University of Derby student, got stuck in a clothes horse after it fell on top of her. When staff at the university campus failed to release her from her unorthodox shackles, the fire service had to be called to the scene.

Ms. Morgan was finally cut free but not before a video was posted on Youtube.

Minister Gets Slapped

An irate member of the public slapped the Indian Minister of Agriculture highlighting an increasing frustration with politics. Minister Sharad Pawar was speaking to members of the press during a political event when he was attacked by a man complaining about inflated food prices.

CNN IBN TV noted that the man, Harvinder Singh shouted ‘Don’t you know why I hit him? The common man is distressed. Am I wrong?’ as he was dragged away.

Attacks on Indian ministers and government officials has become far from a rare occurrence as members of the public are becoming increasing annoyed about perceived government injustices and corruption.

The Postman Who Never Delivers

A postman in England was caught with 30,000 items of post that he had stored in his house.

Paul Willicott, was caught by a member of the public putting the post into his garage and was subsequently reported.

Mr. Wililcott claimed that he was completely overwhelmed by the number of post and was waiting for a time when his workload would ease.

He was given 280 hours of community service.

City Bee-Hives

You don’t necessarily associate bees and city-scapes with one another. The company Philips is about to change all that with its new Urban bee-hive which is says is designed for apartments and flats.

With the falling number of bees, and their importance for life on Earth, this may be just the ticket for urban enviroments.

The bee-hive is fully enclosed and the bees can only enter the hive from outside the window.

Brave people can pull on a cord to smoke the hive before removing the cover to get at the honey.

One Good Turn Deserves Another

After just helping a driver to change a flat car tyre, a man’s good dead was returned as his life was saved by those he had just helped minutes before.

After having helped change the stricken motorists’ tyre, the Good Samaritan suffered a heart attack a few miles up the road. Those that he aided in turn came to his rescue calling the emergency services.

It is likely that without the intervention of the motorists, the man would have died.

Speaking to the Star Tribune, Patrol Sergeant Michael Newton noted ‘It’s an interesting turn of fate.‘

Left Hanging On A Swing

A man had to be rescued by the fire brigade after spending an entire night stuck in a child’s swing after a bet went wrong.
He had made a $100 bet that he could squeeze into a child’s swing.

The 21-year-old was abandoned by his ‘friends’ after he couldn’t get out despite using washing machine liquid to lubricate his legs to get into the swing. Unfortunately, this was a one-way deal and he was unable to extract himself afterwards. The fire service came to his aid the following morning.

Trick Or Teeth

Children were getting paid for handing over sweets in Mansfield, Ohio, United States.

One dentists novel solution to prevent tooth decay was to pay children money for handing over their Halloween treats. Craig Callen offered to pay children one dollar for every pound of sweets up to a maximum of $5.

‘Kids can have the fun of trick-or-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well.’ Callen told the Mansfield News Journal.

Selling Your Customer’s Bike

One customer came out of a shop in Sweden only to find that they had sold her bike. Ulla Oderyd accidentally parked her bike in the second-hand bikes for sale rack. When she came out after browsing the charity shop her bike had already been sold. Oderyd had to walk home.

Luckily the person that bought the bike returned it to the shop after hearing about Oderyd’s plight in the local paper. And this story was given a happy ending.

The Man Who Thought The Moon Was A UFO

In one of the most bizarre emergency 999 phone calls to the Hertfordshire police station in England a man reported mistakenly seeing a UFO when he was in fact looking at the Moon.

He rang the emergency operator claiming that there was a ‘light blazing’. A second apologetic phone call ensued with the caller realising his lunar error.

The €32,000 Parking Ticket

One woman received the fright of her life when she illegally parked her car only to discover a colossal fine of €32,000 had been issued by Sicilian Police in Italy.

The fine arose because the policeman had backdated the punitive interest on the penalty to the year 208 rather than 2008.

The error was corrected and a more reasonable fine of €102 was imposed instead. You would have to wonder though how the policeman in question didn’t realise his error.

Man Claims A Woman Turned Into Donkey

Sunday Moyo, a 28-year-old Zimbabwean was arrested for allegedly having sex with a donkey.

In a very novel story, Moyo claimed that instead of committing bestiality the donkey was in fact a female prostitute that he paid to have sex with it. He protested that the woman transformed into a donkey at the point when he was being arrested. Moyo’s account failed to convince his arrestors though.

Great Underrated Television Series: Five That Escaped

Many television series rightly receive both large audiences and critical appraise. Nonetheless, ever now and then some slip under the net and fail to get the accolades and viewership they deserve. Here is Yellow Magpie’s list of five great series that are completely underrated.

Star Trek Enterprise

Star Trek Enterprise was in many ways one of the best of all the Star Trek’s series. Three things made it a cut above its predecessors. The quality of the cast was far superior to those of Voyager and even The Next Generation. The scripts were compiling and more action-orientated featuring long-running plots that were developed far more than any other of its sister series. In short, the writing was much better.

Finally, the special effects in television had dramatically improved allowing for more realistic alien species and settings.

All of the above should have assured Star Trek Enterprise of large audiences and a long-lived series. However, Star Trek fatigue and the appallingly poor immediate predecessor, Voyager, did not help its cause.

Viewers watching the series for the first time should skip the series finale as Brannon Braga’s appalling final episode should never have been aired.

Due South

Due South was a satirical comedy with an ultra nice Canadian Mountie partnered up with a world-weary, tough-talking urbane cynic. The light nature of the series meant that Due South always left you with a wide smile upon your face after viewing it.

The secret to the series’s popularity was the dynamic between the lead duo and the calibre of the actors playing the parts aided by a very clever dog/wolf. The unusual, inventive story-lines of Due South was also a cut above what it is typical of police programmes.

The series was given an extended life when European televisions stations rescued it from oblivion.

Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip

Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip was a remarkable series from The Westwing creator, Aaron Sorkin. An ensemble piece, the series followed the cast and crew of a hit comedy show. Like Sorkin’s Westwing, Studio 60 was a behind the scenes look at a well-known industry. In this case that industry was television rather than politics.

One of the wonderful attributes of Studio 60 is the razor-sharp wit of the script. Its refined and polished lines bounce between the characters.

Odyssey 5

Odyssey 5 was a short-lived science fiction series. A group of five astronauts witness the world becoming a giant exploding fireball. Another life-form sends them back to an time five years previous to the explosion. The five now have five years to discover what caused the destruction of the Earth and prevent it.

An unusual storyline and a very solid cast of actors including the highly impressive Peter Weller together with a sharp script meant that Odyssey 5 should have become highly popular. Alas it was not to be.

Unfortunately, it seems to be a recurring theme that programmes from Canada, despite their obvious quality, have a poor relationship with U.S. networks.

Da Vinci’s City Hall

Timing in television, as in real life is crucial and often you can either be lucky or unluckly. Da Vinci’s City Hall was unlucky. The series was over-shadowed by the highly popular and critically acclaimed series, The Wire.

Da Vinci’s City Hall had three things going for it. Good acting, a solid script and a great idea. The film follows former Chief Corner and newly elected Mayor of Vancover, Dominic Da Vinci. Da Vinci possesses great ambition and wishes to revolutionise the city by introducing a Red Light District, an ‘injection site’ for drug addicts and cross-training between the police and the fire service.

Needless to say real-life in the form of back-stabbing politics, corruption and individuals pushing agendas have other things to say about Da Vinci’s plans and a battle of wits begins.

Da Vinci’s City Hall’s Vancouver, unlike The Wire’s Baltimore was a city that more people could readily identify with. It is unfortunate that this series never got the viewers its concept and execution demanded and it was cut after just one season.

The Case Of The Craned-off Car

In a bizarre incident, a four-wheel drive Jeep Wrangler was stolen using a crane. Northern Indiana, United States, was the scene of an usual crime as a 4×4 was stolen from the car park of a garage dealership using a mobile crane.

CCTV footage showed the vehicle, which had just been sold, being carried off by the crane. The entire operation took a mere six minutes.

Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, the dealership manager, Matt Magnuson stated ‘The owner thought we were joking with him when we told him it had been lifted out of the lot.’ It didn’t take too long though to convince him otherwise when the garage staff showed him the camera footage.

Police have arrested a suspect and recovered what they believe is the crane in question but the stolen vehicle remains missing.

Winners And Losers

The unfortunate reality of life is that for every winner there has to be a loser. Although sometimes life can be very unfair.

Normally a small, under-14 soccer team drawing a match would get very little news press. However, when the draw is the first point the team has achieved in over four years of playing football – people tend to take note.

Huncoat United who play in the Accrington and District Junior Boys league in England set new records. Unluckily from their perspective, these are the type of records no team would like to make. It takes a lot of courage to keeping playing when your side has lost 70 games in-a-row.

Not one to pass up on their good fortune the team have taken to celebrations. Speaking to The Telegraph manager, Paul Chadwick commented ‘It feels like we have won the World Cup…Even if we don’t pick up another point all season, we have achieved more than we have ever done.’

Before their historic 3-3 draw their best result in four years of competition had been a two-nil loss. Onwards and upwards.

The Bull-dozed Pub

Locals in a pub in Ireland were rudely interrupted by a rampaging bull. The bull put holes in the walls, destroyed a pool table and scattered bar stools in Porter House Tavern, Kingscourt, County Cavan. Despite the bull charging several of the patrons no one was hurt.

Landlord Cyril Rafferty, speaking to the Irish Daily Mirror told the reporter ‘Everyone is laughing about it now – but it wasn’t funny at the time…It’ll take a while before we live this one down and we’ve been getting all the bull-in-the-china shop and Red Bull jokes.’

What may read like a bad joke is actually true. Emergencies bags will be provided to passengers to perform their bodily function.

The Case Of The Stolen Bridge

In one of the most unusual crimes, owners awoke one summer morning only to find that their 45 metre (150 feet), six-metre (20 feet) span bridge was gone. The bridge, estimated to be worth $100,000 was made of corrugated steel and taken from New Castle, Pennsylvania, United States.

Thieves used blowtorches to remove it over a lengthy period of time. It is thought selling it for scrap metal was the reason for stealing the old bridge.

MACARONS are very ‘on trend‘ in France and have a cult following who adore the delicate flavour of these sweet pastel-coloured treats.

People are often seen queuing outside Ladurée on the Avenue des Champs-Elysees to purchase Macarons which sell at around thirteen euro for six.

So what makes macarons so yummy and popular? Well for a start, it is the different flavours, colours and of course the way they are presented, making them appear very special.

In Paris, where everything is chic, they are handled as if they were precious jewels which means purchasing macrons is an experience in itself.

Delightful Fillings

However, they are indeed delicious and very attractive, coming as they do in the tempting colours of pink, green, chocolate brown, lilac and coffee colour.

The filling in a macaron is very important and gives each one a distinctive flavour. They can range from a chocolate ganache, which is a mixture of butter, chocolate and cream, to caramel and from butter cream with added fruit flavours, to even savoury tastes such as foie gras. French macarons are made from egg white, icing sugar and ground almonds.

History And Exclusivity

The most expensive boxes of macarons are produced by chef ,Pierre Herme, who owns restaurants in Paris. A box of his famous macarons is reported to have cost a whopping $7,414.

There is quite a lot of snobbery surrounding these dainty treats. Recently McDonalds in Paris introduced their version of the macaron to the disapproval of the traditionalists. Experts in macarons describe them as heavy and sugary compared to the delicate and flavoursome macroons of other, more specialised, establishments.

Macarons first came to France in 1533 when two nuns came to the town of Nancy during the French revolution. In return for a place to stay, the two sisters baked macarons and sold them.

Macarons should be eaten slowly with each mouthful savoured. They should be eaten somewhere pretty and refined.

The Eurovision Song Contest is now in its 55th year and this year the contest will be held in Oslo. For the past five decades the show has provided enormous entertainment, excitement and rivalry between the various countries taking part.

The very first Eurovision Song Contest was held on May 24, 1956 in the town of Lugano in Switzerland with seven countries taking part. The host country of Switzerland won the contest. Since that time the Eurovision Song Contest has gone from strength to strength and this year 39 countries will compete in the competition with 25 making it to the final in the Telenor Arena in Oslo on Saturday May 29. Each competing country will be able to vote with every country hoping they will get the highest mark of 12 points.

Franco Migliacci Performs ‘Nel Blu Dipinto Dibleu’ For Italy 1978

Down through the years there has been some wonderful songs, but not always the best or most popular songs win the contest. In 1958 Italy’s entry was Nel blu dipinto dibleu, sung by Domenico Modugno and co-written by Franco Migliacci. The song came third but later became a massive hit, winning Grammys’ for best song and record of the year in 1958. It was later recorded by Dean Martin. The song is still popular today and is better known as Volare.

The 1950′s was a time of tremendous paranoia and fear. With governments constantly scaremongering their citizens. Cartoons provided a welcome respite from this and were entertaining, funny and enjoyable. The best 50′s series are still being played on television channels over 50 years later.

Snagglepuss (1959-61)

Snagglepuss featured an camp and quite lazy cat who guest starred on The Yogi Bear Show.

The Rocky And Bullwinkle Show (1959-64)

The Rocky And Bullwinkle Show followed a moose and a squirrel as they encountered many adventures and weird situations.

Now if the truth be told, The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show had quite poor animation. However, that didn’t stop it being successful as it managed to engage both children and adults alike, which was no mean feat.

Captain Pugwash is a pirate who sails the World’s waters. He is often pitted against his enemy Cutt-Throat Jake.

The 60′s was an exciting period in human history. It was full of tremendous potential and new developments. Cartoons of the 60′s were also exciting and innovative and many were so good that they are still being aired.

Scooby Doo, Where Are You? (1969-76)

Scooby Doo was a dog who helped out a group of friends in solving mysteries which often appeared to be paranormal in nature.

Its fun nature and its generic story-lines meant that viewers could easily get the concept and attempt to solve the mysteries too.

The Jetsons (1962-63)

The Jetsons was about a family living in the year 2062. Although the technologies were vastly different, home life seemed just the same as it had been since the start of the 20th century.

The Flintstones (1960-66)

The Flintstones was a series that chartered the antics of the Flinstone and Rubble households in a chronologically incorrect time period that saw Dinosaurs and humans on Earth at the same time.

Like The Jetsons, The Flintstones was a traditional working family set in another time period, in this case the past. The mischievous Fred and his comical antics, coupled with his frequent lies, often got him into trouble especially with his wife, Wilma.

Barney, his best friend, was often along for the ride as Fred bulldozed him through hare-brained scheme after hare-brained scheme. This was the series successful attraction.

Top Cat (1961-62)

Top Cat was a cartoon series about alley cats who loved to wisecrack one another and try to get rich without doing too much hard work. Constantly watched by Officer Dribble, things seldom worked out the way they expected.

Valley Of The Dinosaurs was another family-based cartoon series. The Butler’s discovered a land in which dinosaurs still existed as well as earlier humans.

The Valley Of The Dinosaurs covered two things that were important to viewers, family and dinosaurs. Everyone understands the importance of the family unit and nearly everyone is fascinated by dinosaurs especially those of a younger age.

Captain Caveman And The Teen Angels(1977-80)

Captain Caveman And The Teen Angels was centred around a lovable caveman, the first superhero, who was discovered by a group of girls. The group go about solving mysteries and having adventures.

Some have noted that Captain Caveman borrowed heavily from Charlie’s Angels but the true nature of its success was the likeability of its chief protagonist, Captain Caveman.
