Ann’s Story: Chapter Twenty ‘Close Encounters Of Pleasurable Kind’
Thelma seemed to think that Ann spending the night with her former boss while she was pretending to be someone else was hilarious.
After a while Ann also began to see the funny side. Though she was dreading the inevitable meeting on the street with Mr Johnson once she got back home.
‘You don’t work for him anymore, Ann. Why do you care what he thinks?’
‘I embarrassed him Thelma after-all he did pay my wages for over 15 years, so I am going to have to come up with some sort of credible story. He could have blown my cover at any time during the night. It was nice of him to play along.’
‘We will come up with something, don’t worry’, said a confident Thelma.
Surprisingly, Ann slept well in her comfortable bed in the hotel room and the next day the two women spent an enjoyable time in London wandering in and out of shops before stopping off for lunch at a Bib Gourmand restaurant.
Ann wasn’t exactly sure what a Bib Gourmand restaurant was but she thought it would be very expensive.
‘Oh no Ann. These restaurants always offer gourmet food at reasonable prices. It will be about £24 for a three course meal and the food is usually delicious. Trust me.’
The food was absolutely yummy and the restaurant was comfortable and classy. Ann was really enjoying herself and had to admit Thelma was great company, she was so lively, interesting and colourful.
Nevertheless, she was still adamant she was never going to work as an escort again, even though the five hundred euro she had in her purse felt good.
They finished off the day with a trip to Madam Tussauds and got a great view of the city on the London Eye before flying back home.
Thelma was jetting off to Munich to attend a corporate event with a businessman the next day. When she was gone Ann had to admit she missed her as her life returned to a dull routine. This involved just pottering around the house, looking at television and wondering what she was going to do with the rest of her life.
She knew she had to find work but now she wanted something that would give her that alive feeling she experienced in London with Thelma. She didn’t want to pick just any old job and end up sitting in an office for another 15 years watching everyone else pass her by.
Once more Thelma had asked her to take care of her house as she would be gone for at least three days.
It was while she was pulling the curtains in Thelma’s kitchen one evening that Ann heard someone opening the front door of the house. Her heart began to pound and she felt herself begin to shake.
Then she heard footsteps walk along the corridor before a male voice called out ‘Thelma are you home, honey.’
A wave of relief swept over Ann as she realised it was someone Thelma knew.
Abruptly the kitchen door burst open and there stood Joe looking as handsome as ever. Ann felt weak at the knees and scolded herself for once again not making a better effort with her appearance.
‘Hi Ann,’ he said with a broad smile.
Ann was bowled over that he remembered who she was.
‘Hi Joe, Thelma is away and I am just taking care of the house for her until she gets back,’ she said nervously.
‘Oh okay, I should have checked first I suppose. Well now that I am here I might as well relax for a while I just got back from a business trip so I’m a bit whacked, I was going to hang out here for a few days with Thelma.’
Ann stood looking at him clasping and unclasping her hands on front of her body.
Sit down Ann and I will get you a drink what will you have?’
‘Oh nothing for me thanks I have to get back. I have things to do.’
‘Just one little one, just to keep me company’ he said teasingly.
‘Well okay I will have a small glass of white wine if Thelma has any.’
Joe came back from the dining room with a glass of wine and a beer for himself and sat down opposite Ann at the kitchen table.
‘So tell me about yourself, Ann. How has life been treating you?’ he asked warmly as if they were old friends.
‘There isn’t much to tell I am afraid, I am quite boring and don’t really do anything exciting,’ she answered realising just how true that was.‘Shit why didn’t I go when I had the chance he must think I am so dull and dreary,’ she thought to herself.
‘So why don’t you ever do anything exciting’? he asked playfully, peering into her face. Ann wondered was he flirting with her or sneering at her.
She looked at him not really knowing how to answer his question. She never thought she had a choice in the matter of whether her life was exciting or not. That was how things were and had always been.
‘Well?’ he asked again with an impish smile.
‘What are you a counsellor?’ she retorted with a sharpness that surprised her a bit. She could see he was a bit taken aback.
‘Oh sorry. Am I being too intrusive? My apologies of course it’s none of my business what you do.’
‘I am looking for a new job, something that will excite me and make me want to rush out to work in the morning,’ she said quickly hoping she hadn’t offended him.
‘Well the best of luck with that I hope you find something you love,’ he said geninely.
They sat talking for over an hour and Ann found out that Joe had his own business working in computers. His second name was Sheridan and he had known Thelma for a number of years meeting at a function. Ann wondered had she been his escort.
She eventually said she really must be going as it was getting late.
‘Well it was really nice talking to you again Ann and I hope we can do it it again soon.’ He bent down and kissed her on the cheek.
Ann flushed and felt her heart skip a beat before she let herself out and almost floated across the road.
She spent the rest of the night peering across the road through the split in her curtains to see if she could catch a glimpse of Joe.
The next morning his car was gone leaving Ann feeling empty and very discontented with her lot.
